COP30
This month is the 30th Conference of the Parties
(COP30). It is encouraging that so many
people and so many countries are taking the Earth and Climate Change seriously. It is also so discouraging that it seems that
these efforts have hit a standstill due to the roadblocks of elite and greedy. It is most frustrating that my own country
and its political decay is one of the major evils in the current situation.
COP21 brought us the Paris Climate Treaty in 2016. Pope Francis issued his powerful prophetic
statement on our Common Home in Laudato Si in 2015. Then work on addressing Climate Change ceased
from the US government in the Trump administrations of 2016 and 2024. The lack of leadership by the US does not
change the fact that climate change is happening. The lack of leadership and outright hostility
of the rich, powerful and selfish is a roadblock to further movement by the
world governments to work together and making the necessary changes to address
the environment.
The hope for the earth and its survival, along with all
inhabitants of this place we call our Common Home, is that each one of us
inhabitants can take our own actions, in our lifestyle, use of green energy,
reduction of fossil fuel use and taking part (at least voting) to force our
governments to make the policy changes needed to effect national and global
efforts.
