Protecting Our Children

The policies of the Trump administration, the Republican Party, which controls Congress, and the acquiescence of the Supreme Court, is doing great harm to our children in the future.  While they can hide behind multiple red herring ideas, such as protecting future children by having a strong border, protecting their culture, protecting family values (as they define), they cannot refute two issues that are in the forefront of their recent activity, the destruction of the environment and stealing future generations' financial resources.

It is difficult to understand that anyone could deny the evidence of what is happening to our planet right now - weather disasters, including floods, heat, hurricanes, world-wide temperature and ocean rise, wild-fires, loss of biodiversity, loss of habitat, loss of species, changing migration patterns, and migrations of plants, forests and invasive species.  The planet is at a tipping point right now and any delay in addressing it may put the planet in a death spiral.  The leaders that do not address this aggressively are either totally ignorant, in denial, or totally self-serving greedy people who do not care about their children and future generations.

The current policy is doubling down on fossil fuels, when the opposite is required.  The world is moving toward a moratorium on use and development of fossil fuels.  It is a world-wide issue, and world-wide cooperation is the only way to address it.  Trump has pulled out of these efforts and has removed all incentives for developing alternatives to fossil fuel use, e.g. wind and solar projects and electric vehicles.  This is unconscionable and may sentence our children to a dying world.  While Trump may be an ignorant, evil, greedy individual, how can the rest of the people in Washington DC be the same?

The second issue they have pushed through, despite their past record, is that the Republicans are robbing future generations, again their own children, of $3.4 trillion dollars.  They need our children's money to fuel their own greed, giving it to themselves and their wealthy friends and lobby groups, such as farmers and military contractors.  Borrowing money to pay for people in need is one thing, but to redistribute it to the wealthy is another unconscionable act.

The Republican Party purports to support family values and protecting children.  They have violated the most basic need for their families, providing a roof over their family's head and food on the table.  A destroyed planet will take away every home, including that of their descendants.  Stealing future resources will make it more difficult for their children to survive, let alone eat.

Please be aware that the two future things mentioned here have already started.  Ask anyone who has lost their home to floods, wildfires, tornados and hurricanes.  Ask anyone who is losing Medicaid and SNAP benefits how they will put food on the table.  Ask people starving around the world right now because of cuts to USAID.  I believe the ones supporting these policies are ok with it if it is happening to other people.  What they are doing will make it happen to everyone, including themselves and all of those to come after.
